To all my fellow QBO lovers, I'm jazzed about the pending updates to Product and Service items. As Intuit continues to build out QuickBooks Online functionality we are seeing more and more new and useful features.
These new changes allow for the addition of default classes to items, permit setting of preferred vendors, will ultimately include automated reorder values and allow us to see quantities on purchase orders. You should have already found that the product and service list now has frozen headers.
I would like to share with you comprehensive coverage of all of these changes, but I can only tell you what we know right now, so this is my 'preliminary take' on each feature. As soon as these features are formally released, I will cover more about how these updates actually function in QBO.
So here is a preliminary look at these new updates.
Frozen P&S Header
If you hadn't noticed by now, the Product and Service list has frozen the header. This means that you don't loose the column header titles even though you are scrolling down through hundreds of items. No matter how far down you scroll, or where you stop in the list, the header is right where it belongs at the top of the portion of the list you are viewing. That means no more guessing as to what each column really is. And speaking of columns, one of the soon to be rolled out changes is the new...
Quantity on PO column
You wanted it, you asked for it, and now you are getting it. When you are trying to decide if you can meet a customer's expectations in terms of a particular product it's extremely beneficial to not only know the quantity you have on hand of a specific product, but the quantity you have ordered from your supplier. So, Intuit is adding Quantity on PO to the Product & Services list as part of this new feature roll-out.

Classes on Products & Service items
Much more so than 'Murph', I think this is awesome...I just love it! Soon we will be able to assign Classes to any Product & Service item. This will be a huge time saver and help insure consistency when creating reports.

Like I said, totally awesome!
Preferred Product & Service Vendors
With this new roll-out of features you will also be able to assign a Preferred Vendor to any Product & Service item. This will make ordering more convenient than ever, especially if you have already entered an email for that Vendor into their information.
QBO_Preferred_Vendor
By default, QBO will enter this preferred vendor when you create a PO for the item, as you can see below.
Preferred Vendor on Purchase Order.
From inside the item itself you can reorder a low stock or out of stock item and the Preferred Vendor automatically defaults to the Purchase Order.

Can you say, 'convenient'!
I’m excited and of course curious about these new updates.
During our latest Quarterly QBO updates webinar we had a tremendous response from the audience in terms of interest and questions on these new features.
Like you, we have great anticipation on how Product & Service Classes will affect reports, or whether several items will automatically be combined on a single PO when ordering if they all share the same Preferred Vendor.
I look forward to sharing these findings, along with our thoughts about them, once these updates are finally made live in QBO. So stay tuned for updates!
