If you are an accountant who has firm-billed (wholesale billing or “Bill My Firm”) clients without a Payroll or Contractor Payment subscription, and are filing 1099(s) for the 2022 tax year, you must be aware of the information Intuit has provided (summarized in this feature).
There apparently has been a lot of confusion about a billing change that impacts how your clients file their 1099 forms. This confusion has resulted in an unexpected increase in accountant workload; accordingly, Intuit has put a solution in place to resolve this situation.
The 2023 billing change allows accountants to prepare and e-file 1099 forms without ever leaving QuickBooks Online. However, only accountants themselves can purchase the 1099 e-filing service on behalf of their firm-billed clients since the accountant’s payment method is the only one on file.
As a result, clients are able to prepare their 1099 forms, but accountants have to submit the filing.
Starting the week of Jan. 23, 2023, Intuit has added a new functionality so that firm-billed clients without a Payroll or Contractor Payments subscription can add their own payment method and proceed with e-filing their 1099 forms without requiring their accountant to take action.
With this fix, their clients will be charged $4.99 per form when they e-file.
As an alternative, you can subscribe your clients to QuickBooks Contractor Payments through your QuickBooks Online for Accountants account to file unlimited 1099s at the current $10.50 monthly subscription rate under ProAdvisor Preferred Pricing.
