Last Fall, we gained the ability to “Downgrade” QuickBooks Online files but we had to call Intuit to actually process the change. But now… ProAdvisors or end users can take control and process downgrade changes ourselves.
Why might you want to downgrade? There are several reasons a company might option to downgrade a QBO file including; the business is downgrading or changing course, or just perhaps they over selected when they started the QBO file.
Examples of QBO Downgrade Options
Downgrades
I previously wrote an article detailing what features would be interrupted, need to be recreated and downgrading blockers. If you are contemplating a downgrade I recommend you review my prior article so you can compare features side-by-side.
Do-it-Yourself Downgrade
The ability to downgrade on a 'do-it-yourself' basis can be accessed from inside the Billing and Subscription area of the Accounts and Settings area of QBO. So, if you are ready to downgrade these are the self-guided steps to take.
(1) Start with the QBO Company Gear Icon
(2) Choose Account and Settings
(3) Select Billing and Subscriptions
(4) Click Downgrade

New Customer Support Chat Option for Cancellation
Along with the ability to downgrade QBO subscription ourselves we also have new customer support features which allows the user to chat or call Intuit to review their options before they cancel. This is great if users are unaware they can downgrade.
To access the chat user can follow these steps.
(1) Start with the QBO Company Gear Icon
(2) Choose Account and Settings
(3) Select Billing and Subscriptions
(4) Click Cancel
(5) Choose contact option (call) or chat

What about Wholesale subscriptions?
Wholesale QBO does not have the new 'do-it-yourself' downgrade feature. To downgrade a wholesale QBO file you will still need to contact support at 888-333-3451 for help.
At this time, it is my understanding the new downgrade and cancellation support teams are a US based. If you want a side-by-side comparison of the QBO subscriptions options just click on this link to be taken to the official Intuit website.
