Intuit just released QuickBooks 2020 Desktop, and over the next few days and weeks, QuickBooks ProAdvisors (for Desktop), Enterprise Users, and QuickBooks Pro/Premier 'Plus' subscribers will be notified about the availability of the initial release of the software. Soon thereafter, QuickBooks Desktop 2020 versions will start appearing on retailers' shelves.
Insightful Accountant has been privy to various pre-release versions of these products for months, and has had multiple communications with Intuit personnel, including product managers and developers, so we can help you learn about the new products. This article takes a closer look at one or more of the features released as part of the QuickBooks Desktop 2020 (and associated) product updates.
If case you haven't read my article summarizing the Desktop Products then the chart below, courtesy of Intuit, reflects which new features are available in which QuickBooks releases. Of course, I would encourage you to read 'My QuickBooks Desktop 2020 Summary article'.

Payroll Status for Direct Deposited Payroll
This feature requires QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier, Accountant 2020 or Enterprise 20.0 with a current Payroll Subscription and Direct Deposit authorization(s). The feature is designed to allow QuickBooks users to confirm the status of their direct deposited payroll when they pay their employees via Direct Deposit. This feature is only available in the U.S., it is NOT available in either Canada or the U.K.
Prior to 2020, QuickBooks users have not known the status of their direct deposited payroll run(s) without either contacting support or waiting on confirmation emails from Intuit. All of that has changed with this new feature.
QuickBooks 2020 (or Enterprise v20) users access this feature from the QuickBooks menu bar, then select Employees and choose View Payroll Run Status (as shown below). Note this service, as with direct deposit itself, requires an Internet connection.
Access Direct-deposit Payroll Status from the Employee menu, then choose View Payroll Run Status.

In the Recent Payrolls section choose a payroll, then select the View Payroll Run Status drop-down and choose Selected payroll (as shown below).
For a Selected Payroll View the Payroll Run Status from a selected Recent Payroll, the Payroll Status window will open displaying the Direct Deposit status.

You will see the status of the paycheck on the Payroll status window that pops-up (as shown below).
The Payroll Status window will display the current activity of the Payroll reflecting such status as 'Sent to Intuit', 'Sent to Bank', 'Payroll Process' or some form of error.

The status reported will either be:
- Sent to Intuit – Intuit received the payroll and is currently processing it.
- Sent to Bank – Intuit sent the debit request to the Bank account. The employees should get their direct deposit posted on the next business day.
- Payroll Processed – Intuit has debited the business Bank account and sent the payroll to each employee’s bank.
In this close-up view of the Payroll status window you can see examples of all three of the above status for direct deposit.

But the status can also be:
- Debit Request Declined – An error typically due to insufficient funds in the business Bank account, Intuit will attempt to debit the funds again 24 hours after the initial attempt. You should add funds to the business bank account and wait for Intuit to re-process the direct deposit payroll requests, payroll service processing is on hold during this time, and the hold period can be for a period of up to 5 business days, or
- Debit Request Rejected – Some reasons for this included, but are not limited to, insufficient funds, a closed bank account, an invalid bank account number, unable to locate the bank account.
When payroll status errors occur an email will be transmitted from Intuit regarding the error to the account owner, the account owner will need to refer to that email in order to take the appropriate steps in resolution of the specific error. Typically a hold will be placed on the account for purposes of direct deposit processing until such time as the error is resolved in full. Matters related to Direct Deposit insufficiency, account holds, and other payroll direct deposit transactional errors should be referred to Intuit Payroll Risk Management (live Intuit Chat link) or at 866-729-2402.
That wraps up my article on the new Direct Deposit Payroll Status feature, but for an overview of all the QuickBooks 2020 features be sure to turn over my QuickBooks Desktop (for Windows) 2020 Summary here, as well as the companion QuickBooks for Mac 2020 Summary which can be found here.
