Intuit recently announced the release of QuickBooks 2022 Desktop. The Author has been evaluating various pre-release versions of these products for almost a year and has spent hours communicating with Intuit personnel, including product managers and developers, so we can help you learn about the new products. This article is one in a series of individual product features intended to provide additional content to that found in our QuickBooks Desktop 2022 Product Summary.
About the Send Payment Links feature
If you ever wanted to have a way to send a payment request to a customer and accept money without producing an invoice, then the new Send Payment Links feature is for you. This new feature lets you create and send a payment link (trackable within QuickBooks), accept payments or deposits even before you invoice your customer and record payments as a credit for your customer.
This new functionality will be available to all QuickBooks Desktop 2022 users, including Pro Plus, Premier Plus, QuickBooks Desktop Accountant, and all QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise Solutions (v22.0) versions in the United States. Additionally, the Send Payment Links feature requires an active QuickBooks Payments[1] account.
Using QuickBooks Desktop Payment Links
Payment links are a payment tool that lets QuickBooks Desktop users collect payments because they send a payment link to their customer(s) to get paid quickly. Payment links can also collect advanced payment(s) before work begins or an invoice is created, making payment links extremely convenient.
Sending a Payment Link in QuickBooks Desktop
- Go to the Customers menu.
- Choose Payment Links.
- Enter the amount and description.
- Select an existing customer or add a new customer.
- Enter the customer email.
- Set the appropriate payment method (credit card or ACH).
- Click Send Payment Link.
- QuickBooks sends an email containing the requested payment details and a pay button to your customer.
- You'll receive a confirmation email along with a copy of the Payment link to your email.
- You can share the auto-generated link with your customer via text message or whatever messaging method you prefer.
- When your customer selects the link, they enter their payment details as if they were paying an invoice.
When using Payment Links
- Your customers can't change the amount or pay partially. However, after they submit payment, a receipt is automatically generated.
- Payment links are only for single use with a single customer. Therefore, create a new Payment link per customer payment.
- Payment links can't follow up on a payment for an invoice previously sent.
- Payments made through Payment links are shown as customer credits. Nothing changes in your books until you apply the credit to the invoice.
Viewing the Payment Links Dashboard
You can view all Payment links, details, and status and send reminders from a unique dashboard.
- Select the Customer menu.
- Then select the Payment links menu. You can also select the Payment links icon on the Home screen to view the dashboard.
