A few weeks ago Murph wrote my QBO Monday Minute column while I was out on a teaching tour for Intuit. In that article he did a great job presenting information on the QuickBooks Online Price Rules (Beta) feature, but what he didn't tell you was that turning on Price Rules also enables the new Customer Types functionality.
These two features are at this time linked so if you want Customer Types you must turn on Price Rules. The two features enhance each other by allowing you to pinpoint what customers should receive the discounts which is great for offering a specific group a specified discount. Plus, to get even more specific use products and services Categories to target a customer type, product and services category for each price rule.
If you have not yet turned on Price Rules here are the steps.
- Gear Icon
- Account and Settings
- Sales
- Turn on Price Rules
To see both of these features in action you can download and watch the MP4 player version of Insightful Accountant's 'QB Talks' January 2018 Webinar which includes both the Price Rules and Customer Types in the final webinar segment.
If you have checked out price rules then you know they are great because they allow you to create holiday, friends and family, military or any other discount program. With Price Rules you can also increase prices when necessary. But this article isn't about Price Rules, just the 'extra' benefits' of Customer Types that comes along with Price Rules.

Reporting Customer Types of Customers
At present the only way to view a Customer Type report is to create and then customize a Customer Contact list.

Once the report is open you are ready to customize it:

The result is a Customer Type Report.

In the future I would expect to see Customer Type visible on an Income Report where type of customer would be highly beneficial. Because this is part of the 'Beta' Price Rules feature, it means that Intuit is asking for feedback on this new functionality; therefore, be sure to leave feedback so Intuit knows where Customer Type is beneficial for you and your clients.
