When parts of this story first ran back in November 2021, we heard a lot about the QuickBooks Online Advanced App during "QuickBooks Connect." During the virtual conference, we were told what it would do for ProAdvisors, bookkeepers and accountants, and how it was designed to take what we loved most about QBO-Accountant and make it better.
We later found out the app actually provided more than just enhancements for accountants and ProAdvisors.
While many people were confused by the word "Advanced" in the app's name—thinking it was only for users of QuickBooks Online Advanced—that wasn't true. It also was initially made available to QBO-Accountant users.
The app was designed to run under Microsoft Windows (64-bit) and provide enhanced innovative navigation and enhancements to speed up workflows.
With multi-tab and company switcher features, the app was stabilized for power users spending several hours working in QuickBooks Online. It also was designed to be especially beneficial to QuickBooks users who accessed QuickBooks multiple times per day or who used more than one QBO Account.
So, you may be wondering why I am dredging up content about an app we've already discussed. Well, there are two reasons.
First is that the original article was the most highly read of all Insightful Accountant articles during 2022, even though the article first appeared in November 2021.
Second, and even more important, is because the QuickBooks Online App that once was exclusive to Advanced and Accountant now is available to all QuickBooks Online users of Windows and Mac. Even if you are a Mac user, you can use the app to gain access to the same great feature set that QuickBooks Online Windows users have had for almost 18 months.
The reason behind Intuit's decision is simple. It is attempting to make transitioning from desktop to online as easy and painless as possible for all QuickBooks desktop users. Its enhanced migration tools, services and efforts have made the move itself easy.
Now it wants to make the transition painless by providing an app that enables users to customize the interface in ways that make the look, feel and interactions more like the desktop (Windows or Mac) users know.
Whether you are transitioning from QuickBooks Desktop Windows or QuickBooks Desktop Mac:
Users can work in a familiar view within the app
- Users have the option of a navigation map view similar to the home page workflows found in their QuickBooks desktop products. This may speed up and simplify workflows for some users by providing a roadmap of related steps and processes.
Stay signed in so you can get to work faster
- When users select the QBO Online app rather than QuickBooks via a web browser, they can stay signed in for up to six months, unless they manually sign out. They can sign in once and remain signed in so they can access QBO as necessary without additional sign-in requirements.
Keep information for multiple companies open
- Another significant benefit is accessing multiple QuickBooks Online companies simultaneously and switching between them without reloading each company.

Note: Before you contact support about any problems with the app, check your browser first. If it works, you may need to install the app again to fix it.
