Recently, there has been some chatter that once Projects is turned on there is no going back but… let me share with you a recent discovery Ann Lee my partner found while playing with the feature. You can in-fact turn it on and off but only while logged in as the Master Admin of the company file and not even the Accountant User has this ability. Be aware though that there is another scenario when this trick will NOT work and that's when you are both the Master Admin and the Accountant User.
There are sometimes instances when clients want NO access to QBO and so the Accountant User is by default the Master Admin. To work around the ability to control Projects under this scenario you can promote another user to the Master Admin role. By the way, promoting another user to Master Admin will not change wholesale billing.
Let me show you both turning on Projects and then turning them off. As you can see in the below example Projects has not yet been turned on.
To Turn-on Projects:
1) You must be logged in as Master Admin
2) Click the Company Gear Icon
3) Select Account and Settings
4) Choose Advanced

5) Select the pencil in the Project field to edit the setting to ON
6) Click the green 'Save' button to make the change to your settings and activate Projects.
Turning-off Projects:
Now that Projects has been turned on as the Master Admin you can choose to turn OFF the feature as long as you are again logged in as the Master Admin.
1) You must be logged in as Master Admin
2) Click the Company Gear Icon
3) Select Account and Settings
4) Choose Advanced
5) Select the pencil in the Project field to edit the setting to OFF

6) Click the green 'Save' button to make the change to your settings so as to deactivate Projects.
What super news this is if you have not yet turned on Projects and want to take it for a test drive or if you have had a client turn it on and now what’s to reverse the decision.
The not so super news is if you turned Projects on as any other user other than the Master Admin including the Accountant User you cannot turn Projects OFF even if later logged in as the Master Admin.
You can see below, logged in as any other User than the Master Admin Projects when enabling Projects a warning will appear stating Projects is permanent.

So if you intend to 'play around' with Projects, be sure to turn it on ONLY as the Master Admin user so you will have the option to turn it off later if you don't want, like or need it.
Projects is a new feature and as time rolls by tweaks will continue to be made and since Intuit listens to our Feedback make sure you share with Intuit your thoughts.
