Editor's Note: This is an introduction to a new 'Warehouse Wednesday' set of articles that Murph will begin posting to "Be Insightful" Premium Content next week. In this mini-series, he will provide an in-depth look at Acumatica ERP. However, that is only one of several in-depth series looking at various ERPs providing alternatives for QuickBooks Premier and Enterprise users when considering migration.
Acumatica vs QuickBooks - an Introduction
There is an excellent reason to consider switching from QuickBooks Enterprise to Acumatica… "Who knows how long QuickBooks Enterprise will continue to exist." I wouldn't even consider a conversion delay if I were using QuickBooks Premier or Pro.
QuickBooks Desktop has generally been a great product, especially considering its long history. Intuit would have you believe that QuickBooks Online, especially its 'Advanced' SKU, is just as capable as QuickBooks Enterprise, but it isn't.
In this author's opinion, QuickBooks Advanced will never be as capable as Enterprise, and QuickBooks Enterprise isn't likely to improve beyond a nip-n-tuck here and there. Intuit is focusing on and bet all its resources into its Cloud products.
Enterprise is a server/desktop-based software designed to run a single business and provide a defined functionality based on business type. If you are a manufacturer, it provides basic manufacturing capabilities like assemblies using a Bill-of-materials (BOM) to fabricate relatively simple products. Beyond that, you need a plug-in like MISys Manufacturing or Fishbowl Inventory to gain the complexity many manufacturing businesses require.
In contrast, Acumatica is a comprehensive cloud-based solution that handles your accounting and manages your operational requirements, including manufacturing functionality. With Acumatica, you can manage every aspect of your manufacturing business without needing add-ons or plug-ins to accomplish required tasks.
With Acumatica, you will manage production orders, release and schedule orders for the shop floor, and track material and labor costs in ways you only dreamed of with QuickBooks Enterprise or thought would never be possible with QBO Advanced. And Acumatica supports make-to-stock, make-to-order, engineer-to-order, configure-to-order, repetitive, batch process, and project-driven manufacturing requirements. You won't find capabilities like that inside any version of QuickBooks.
With Acumatica, you will quickly boost efficiency because it offers a manufacturing ERP designed for your needs. Its Material Requirements Planning (MRP) functionality generates time-phased manufacturing and purchasing plans for optimal inventory availability tied to materials forecast and customer demands.
With Acumatica's bill-of-materials and routing features, users can efficiently plan and manage inventories, costs, manufacturing processes, and complete revision control requirements. You will directly connect materials, work instructions, attributes, and overhead costs with your manufacturing labor operations and incorporate the time-phased release of materials. You can quickly gain a costed-engineering view of your production operations.
For those of you reading this article who are or work with manufacturing businesses using QuickBooks Premier or Enterprise, I've just started explaining why you might want to consider migrating to Acumatica from QuickBooks before Intuit informs you of the demise of Desktop. But Acumatica isn't just a Manufacturing ERP; it offers functionality for Construction, Distribution, Professional Services, Retail, and many other businesses.
