Editor's Note: Intuit recently released its QuickBooks Desktop 2023 line-up. Murph has been evaluating various pre-release versions of these products for almost a year, spending hours communicating with Intuit personnel so we can help you learn about the new products. This is the seventh in our series of individual product articles intended to provide additional content to what can be found in our QuickBooks Desktop 2023 Product Summary.
About the New Card Reader
A new node Card Reader is supported for QuickBooks Desktop using QuickBooks Payments1. It enables you to take contactless cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and multiple other forms of payment in person from your customers for your services.
But while the new card also will read 'EMV chipped' cards, it won't let you swipe the magnetic strip on a card.

This new card reader has an LED display, which allows you to pay, tip and transact business without sharing a mobile device since it works via Bluetooth with the QuickBooks GoPayment app that's compatible with QuickBooks Desktop.
And because you use QuickBooks GoPayments with your QuickBooks Desktop, when you begin using the new QuickBooks Card Reader, the payments automatically are recorded and matched so that your books stay organized without extra effort.
If you find you are having difficulty with this, follow these steps:
- Go to the Banking menu
- Choose Record Merchant Service Deposits
- Select Change your deposit settings
- Turn on the Auto match & record settings
- Select Save
- For further information, check out the article, "Automatically Recording QuickBooks Payments Bank Deposits."
This new reader recharges using a USB-C cable, which is provided with the reader when you purchase it. An optional QuickBooks Power Stand, which the Node Card Reader attaches magnetically, will recharge the reader wirelessly. The QuickBooks Power Stand is sold separately.
Feature Availability
The new node Card Reader is an optional (sold separately) feature that is compatible with all 2023 Desktop Plus (Pro & Premier), Enterprise (v23), and Accountant versions within the US as of its initial 2023 product (R1) release, But this feature requires an active QuickBooks Payments1 account.
