Microsoft Excel may not have been the first spreadsheet software, but it was the first one that survived. But today, there is Google Sheets, a cloud-based spreadsheet application that provides outstanding collaboration features so almost anyone can access it. Google Sheets is extremely easy to use yet still able to perform complex data processes. Google Sheets also works well with all the other Google-based services. But the most significant benefit of Google Sheets is that it’s FREE.
That’s right, while you can argue that more and more tech-savvy folks use Google Sheets as their spreadsheet of choice, I would bet the real reason so many people do is because of the economics. Why pay big bucks for a spreadsheet like Excel when you can use Google Sheets for free?
But if you are using QuickBooks, direct-connectivity to Google Sheets is limited from QuickBooks Online unless you are using QBO-Advanced. One alternative around this limitation is G-Accon which lets users connect and sync Google Sheets with any version of QuickBooks Online bidirectionally. The keyword there is ‘bidirectionally’. Once you connect G-Accon to Google Sheets, you can easily export data and reports or build custom queries. Then make changes to your data in Google Sheets and upload that data directly back to QuickBooks.
So, we’ve solved the issue of connectivity between any version of QuickBooks Online and Google Sheets using G-Accon. But the next question is, what do you do with your QuickBooks data once it’s in your spreadsheet?
While there are tons of tips, tricks, and known skill-sets for “that other spreadsheet”, most Google Sheets users are not aware of the same features and functionalities existing for their spreadsheet. And Google Sheets is like any other spreadsheet software; if you don’t use it regularly, it’s easy to forget the basics of using it, especially those tips and tricks that help so much.
For example, did you know that Google Sheets has a ‘COUNTIF’, a ‘COUNNTIFS’, ‘COUNTBLANK’, and a ‘COUNTUNIQUE’ math function? ‘COUNTIF’ returns a conditional count across a range, while ‘COUNTIFS’ returns the count of a range depending on multiple criteria. ‘COUNTBLANK’ returns the number of empty cells in a given range, and ‘COUNTUNIQUE’ counts the number of unique values in a list of specified values and ranges.
There is a lot to learn about Google Sheets, especially when you combine it with G-Accon. For example, you might want to build custom reports of your QBO data that you can’t design within QuickBooks. Of course, you could subscribe to some Reporting App, but why do that if you already need to download and upload data to Google Sheets. G-Accon will give you flexible templates with filters, dynamic dates, and so much more to create a wide variety of reports. You can even have these reports automatically refreshed hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly.
