Back in June, I wrote “Murph’s Guide to Hosting QuickBooks” in which I spent a lot of time discussing the implications of ‘Dedicated’ vs. ‘Shared’ hosting (and servers). I gave you a fairly clear example in which Dedicated Hosting (AKA: Dedicated physical server environments) is like owning your own house, while Shared Hosting on a virtual server is like living in an apartment complex. And Shared Hosting on a common server is like living in a single apartment with roommates.
When you have a ‘Dedicated physical server’, it’s like you have your ‘own server’ that the hosting company is simply responsible for operating within a safe and secure environment. They are required under contract with you to maintain your server according to the specifications you set under the guidelines the hosting company complies with to maintain their certification as a hosting entity. But in reality, you are or should be, in charge and control of your server.
If you want something accomplished, within the scope of the hosting agreement, it is up to the hosting company to perform that service within an allotted amount of time… they are not there to tell you “no, we don’t do that simply because you request it.” If you want something installed on your server, it should be installed within a reasonable amount of time… they are not there to tell you “no we don’t allow that.” But more and more of a lot of the ‘older hosting companies’ are simply ignoring the needs and requests of their customers, or that’s what their clients (our readers) are telling me.
This is one reason why more and more people are moving away from some of the hosting companies that have been around so long because they are set in their ways and simply have a “no” attitude. You ask them to enhance your dedicated server, the answer is “no.” You ask them if they will support a new 3rd-party product, and again the answer is “no.” You ask them about technical issues with your data or your hardware and they say, “no, we don’t talk about that with our clients.”
If these are the attitudes of your hosting company and their attitude can’t be changed pretty quickly, then in reality you don’t have a ‘Dedicated physical server’ environment at all because your server isn’t yours since you have no control over it. In essence, you are just leasing disc space on a computer no different than any other arrangement they offer but paying more for the illusion of self-control. They are ‘magicians’ just fooling you into thinking you have a dedicated server; but, when it comes to ‘hosting services’ you don’t need a magician.
What you need is a reliable hosting company…and that’s why it’s time for you to consider moving ‘down the road’ to another hosting company if you have discovered you are dealing with a magician. So, if you are tired of your ‘magician’s tricks’ about their dedicated hosting service, and your lack of control over ‘your server and data’ running in their environment, you should take time to explore your options by attending one of Insightful Accountant’s upcoming webinars hosted by our own Liz Scott.
