Now before you think I have gone a little crazy, Getting Naked1 is the title of a business book I just finished reading. It was suggested to me by Joe Woodard, and it was worth reading. The author is Patrick Lencioni, founder and president of a management consulting firm.
Getting Naked refers to how we interact with clients and get over three key fears. Presented in the form of a fable it was easy reading but led to powerful thinking. Some of the things the author suggests are things I do, like "giving away." Other areas are ones I think I should work on.
The book talks about the importance of “admitting your weaknesses and limitations”. There are three key fears and related principles that tie to those fears. The fears are:
- Fear of Losing the Business
- Fear of Being Embarrassed
- Fear of Feeling Inferior
To learn about the principles and to understand the fears and how they impact your ability to be a good consultant, you’ll need to read the book. I think you will find it worth the time.
Just don't Google the title.... Check the books section in Amazon or your library or visit the website at http://www.tablegroup.com/books/getting-naked. The website even offers free tools to help you understand and use the model. To get the most benefit, read the book first!
(Editor's note: "I for one am going to enjoy talking with Caren about 'Getting Naked' the next time I see her!" Oops, that doesn't sound quite right does it? ha ha ha ha Murph)
