Manual rules and bolt-on automations are running out of road. In the Future Forward session, Rob Hamilton of Digits laid out a different path: an AI ledger that learns from your work in real time, reduces close time, and gives clients a modern, interactive view of their numbers.
Digits has spent six years building an autonomous general ledger that uses machine learning at the core. The product launched to operators in March, then to accounting firms at Scaling New Heights. The goal is simple. Let the system do the heavy lifting while the firm supervises, corrects where needed, and advises faster.
What changes with an AI ledger
- Streaming data in. Native connections to more than 10,000 institutions through Plaid, plus direct ties to tools like Gusto, Ramp, Mercury, and Stripe. Transactions flow into the ledger continuously.
- Auto-booking with confidence. The model learns at the company level. If Digits has seen a transaction pattern before, it books it the same way. If confidence is low, it goes to the firm inbox for review.
- Instant learning. When you fix something, the system learns immediately. No weeks of retraining. Your corrections apply right away and improve future accuracy.
- Bulk review and edits. Firms can search by party, source, category, and timeframe, then bulk recode when needed. Reconciliations and chart-of-accounts management are built in.
A better client experience
Digits sits on top of the ledger with a consumer-grade interface. Firms can build custom dashboards for what the client actually cares about, like cash flow, travel spend, or vendor trends. Clients can click into categories, see underlying transactions, and answer basic questions before the meeting. That means your conversations move up the value chain.
Firm tools and training
- Partner Program and Firm Console. Centralized client cards, user roles, and permissions. Give staff access to only the books they should see.
- Firm Model. Train a model that reflects your firm’s way of working across your client set. Onboard new clients faster and keep consistency across teams.
- Digits Academy. Training and resources to help firms adopt AI-native workflows.
- Proof from practice. Digits’ product team ran 2,000 closes on real books to harden the system. Firms using Digits report about 30 percent faster closes after three months.
What this means for your firm
You spend less time on entry and cleanup, and more time on interpretation and planning. The system surfaces what needs your attention. You correct, it learns, and your next close goes faster. The client sees a modern product experience that fits how they expect software to work today.
