When taxpayers owe the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) receive collection notices; that's when your phone rings with new business. For three years now, the IRS's Automated Collection System (ACS) has dramatically throttled back the automatic sending of these collection notices due to the pandemic.
But, that's all about to change.
The IRS announced on May 5 that ACS began mailing 5 million to 8 million collection notices (CP14s) in early June, starting the collection cycle for many.
I cannot remember a time that the IRS mailed out these many collection notices at once. (they have hired more than 6,000 additional ACS/PPS agents to handle the incoming phone calls.)
And as sure as the sun rises, these will be followed by the highly anticipated CP504 and 1058 LTR, which come certified and allow the IRS to garnish paychecks, levy bank accounts and seize property if an appeal is not filed.
