The Automation: Putting Accounting on the Right Path report from ShareFile was commissioned to understand the sentiment of 300+ accountants across accounting firms and in-house teams toward the state of the industry, job satisfaction, and receptiveness to automation.
Data from the report is directly challenging common assumptions being made about the industry.
Notably, 96% of accountants view automation in their industry as important, with 51% considering it very important.
Despite concerns about job displacement, many see technology as a growth catalyst, and report daily challenges without it.
Not only does the study challenge assumptions regarding automation and job satisfaction, but it also emphasizes how technology can be better utilized to advance the profession.
Additional highlights from the study include:
- Over 93% of accountants are satisfied with the current state of the accounting profession, and more than 90% are satisfied with their current job (95%) and the company they work for (94%).
- 92% of the accountants reported they would still choose their same profession if given the chance to start over, and 62% are not looking for a career change. Both of these demonstrate high levels of satisfaction despite an ongoing talent shortage.
- Seven out of 10 accountants report that having to handle a large number of routine procedures without the benefit of automation is a regular problem for them. 95% say the technology will enhance the industry experience in the future.
- Accountants who work for a firm are more likely than those who work in-house to say the accounting field is undergoing a transformational phase with new opportunities and evolving roles.
