Workplace burnout is a type of anxiety or stress that comes from the mental and physical exhaustion from someone’s job. While burnout can come from working long hours or busy schedules, it can also stem from feeling under-appreciated or devalued.
Accountants show up on almost every list of the top stressed, burnt out or under-appreciated professionals. Accountants are often working with many clients, working long hours (not just during tax season), and are dealing with deadlines year-round. It’s easy to become stressed, and overtime, burnt out.
So, it’s important for these professionals to take care of themselves, in more ways than one. Here are three ways to combat workplace burnout.
Ask for new projects or responsibilities
If you’re feeling burnt out on a project or client – consider talking with your supervisor about mixing it up. If moving to a different client account isn’t an option, maybe start looking at different skills you could sharpen. Teach yourself about different applications that you could implement in your firm or introduce to your clients. Just get your brain working on other things while still being productive.
Be mindful of your future plans
Sometimes when you’re working on getting to where you want to be professionally, it can seem like an endless journey. So, it’s important to keep your eye on the prize. Focus on how far you have come and where you plan to go. Use every day as a stepping stone for your next accomplishment. Be productive and be purposeful in your actions.
Spend your off time wisely
When you’re working early mornings and late nights, you might want to spend your off days catching up on much-needed sleep. And while it’s not a bad way to spend an off day, it’s also important to take advantage of this time. Getting out of the office and house and enjoying fresh air and new sights is a great way to get your head out of work and come back feeling refreshed. Take a vacation, enjoy a staycation or even a day trip to the zoo. Just get out and do something!
