When taxpayers who owe the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) receive collection notices, your phone rings. These are calls that need to be addressed now.
For three years now, the IRS' Automated Collection System (ACS) has dramatically throttled back the automatic sending of these collection notices due to the pandemic.
But that's all about to change. As you read this, the IRS is in the process of mailing out 5 million to 8 million collection notices (CP14s). The move will kick in the collection cycle for many taxpayers.
I cannot remember a time the IRS mailed out these many collection notices at one time. To note, they recently hired more than 6,000 additional ACS/PPS agents to handle the incoming phone calls.
And, as sure as the sun rises, they will be followed by the highly anticipated CP504s and 1058 LTRs, which will come certified. This will allow the IRS to garnish paychecks, levy bank accounts and seize property if appeals aren’t filed.
