AICPA Women's Leadership Summit
This Women in Accounting Wednesday feature is brought to you by the AICPA Women's Global Leadership Summit, taking place in New York City, November 14-16. This week, we are highlighting Janine Rogan.
"I am currently a consultant to a large software company that is based out of California. Canada is a relatively new market and I’m excited to be part of a team that is going to grow this global brand. Prior to joining this company, I was a tax specialist at one of the big accounting firms focusing on Oil and Gas in Calgary Alberta Canada. It’s been a big change, but a fun and exciting change!"
When Insightful Accountant asked Janine to select two words that she felt best described what her daily life is like in relationship to her family or home life, she said, "Quality Time. Since I travel for work on occasion and both my husband and I are in fast paced careers, we have to make sure that when we do have time together it’s well spent. Sometimes this means watching 3 hours of Netflix on a Tuesday night while sharing a bottle of wine, and other times it’s a quick phone call or FaceTime between meetings when I’m out of town. It’s important to us to have each other’s undivided attention when we do have time to spend together."
Being able to balance work with your personal life is something every professional has to deal with. Sometimes it can be hard to motivate yourself to keep that balance. Janine told us, "One of my main motivators when it comes to work is making a difference in this world and leaving it in a better place than when I entered the work force. I’m passionate about the consulting work I do as well as my financial literacy business I run on the side. There can be a lot of hours and calls while I’m in the cab to the airport, but if I’m able to help the next generation through educating I’ve done my part.
When it comes to family I think two often people tend to put things off. I try really hard to stay in contact with my family that is out of town. I also work as hard as I do so that my husband and I have the luxury to travel around the world guilt free."
Being in such a demanding and high-stress field, Janine has to be able to stay organized and on top of her responsibilities, both at work and home. "I swear by using my iPhone to schedule everything, whether it’s in my personal life, work (9-5), or my business. Making sure everything is synced is key to not forgetting anything. Things like Amazon 2 day shipping have saved my life before whether I needed something for the office or a quick gift for a friend."
Lastly, when we asked Janine any life-hacks or tips that help her stay organized, focused and healthy in both her work and home life, she gave us a great answer. "I try to automate as much as I can. If there is a process to automate, I do it. The best example I can think of is online banking. A variety of our bills and savings goals are all automated so that neither of us has to spend time worrying about if things are getting paid or we are saving enough. The other hack I have is paying for certain tasks like house cleaning. When you work more than 40 hours a week there are certain tasks you just don’t want to do. Paying for someone else to do it means I get to spend more quality time with my family. Lastly, ordering groceries online has saved us a ton of time and money. Whether you are picking them up or getting them delivered, it’s worth it!"
