“Your business dreams aren’t average.”
That is the message adorning the website of Top 100 ProAdvisor Veronica Wasek. The mission for her and her team is simple. Each works to help their clients build something that impacts their lives and the lives of their customers.
After spending almost 25 years working for others in the public accounting and corporate world, VM Wasek founder and CEO admittedly was at a crossroads. At the height of the Great Recession, she already had been laid off from two jobs.
That’s when her entrepreneurial spirit took hold. In 2010, with nothing to lose, she started VM Wasek CPA LLC. She had no money and no clients. But there were other things on her side, namely the perfect storm of challenges, innovation and technology—all of which presented an opportunity to push the needle forward.
Veronica developed a new approach to working with her clients. It would go beyond the “once a year” relationship an accountant would typically have with a client, and focus on solving business problems, adding value and serving the day-to-day needs of each one.
We caught up with Veronica to get her thoughts on being named a Top 100 ProAdvisor and what the future holds.
Give us a snapshot of your business, including how long you have been in business, etc.
I started my accounting business in 2010 with no money, no clients, and no idea how I would find clients. Today, I have four employees and we work exclusively with Shopify clients.
How does the award fit into your overall business mission statement?
I set a goal early on in my business that I wanted to be one of the top ProAdvisors in the country. I met that goal and have continued to develop my skills and expertise.
How will you leverage the honor in your continued success?
One of my goals is to continually improve my skills and to share what I learn with others. Being in the Top 100 allows me to have a bigger influence and bigger motivation to help others achieve their goals.
What are some of your strategies/initiatives for 2022? Business? Personal?
For 2022 and in the next three years, my goal is to continue to mentor two key employees so that I can sell my accounting business to them. On a personal side, my goal is to spend as much time with my husband at our farm.
What are some of the biggest issues/trends impacting the accounting space today?
The biggest is on the e-commerce side—for app developers to provide us with good inventory integrations, and to be able to manage multi-channel and multiple payment processors.
What’s the biggest item on your to-do list right now?
To launch my marketing course in October.
What are your expectations for 2022 and beyond?
To make strategic partnerships with industry influencers who teach specialized knowledge so that accounting professionals in my community can develop technical skills in specific niches.
What’s the best piece of advice you can offer your clients today?
Systematize your business so that you can work yourself out of a job.
What was the best advice you ever received?
It was from Brad Smith, former CEO of Intuit Corporation. He told me to focus on my top three priorities. I've done that ever since and have become much more productive.
Is there a story you can share that really sums up the work you do for your clients?
I'd like to think that all interactions with our clients are examples of success stories. We help many different clients to gain peace of mind around the financial side of their business. I would say that my biggest source of satisfaction is empowering my clients to understand the financial side of their business.
