Are people finding your website, or are you getting lost in the noise? Chances are, if you’re not getting leads from your website, your site has not been optimized for search. When people come to me for website advice, the first thing I do is look at their title tags, and you can too.
Type your website domain into a browser so that your home page displays in a tab. Hover you mouse over the browser tab and see what comes up. If It’s something like “Home,” “your company name,” or worse, “WordPress site,” then your site is not optimized. No wonder no one can find you. You might have built it, but you have to do more to get people to visit.
SEO stands for search engine optimization, and it’s the most common thing web developers fail to include when they sell businesses a website. You have to have SEO for people to find you. It’s under very rare circumstances that a site can rank without it.
If your site does not have SEO, then the first thing to do is to get a little bit of education about it. It is a technical topic, but the goal is simple – to use SEO in a way that will get your site to rank higher in search results when a prospect enters a relevant search query for the type of services you offer.
There are many major topic areas in the field of SEO (which is a complete profession in and of itself):
- Keywords – these are the search terms you want to rank for
- On-page SEO – these are modifications that can be made to your website code to help it to rank higher.
- Off-page SEO – these are all the things you can do outside of your website to get it to rank higher.
The last two can also be referred to as organic SEO. This is opposed to paid search, where you can pay for ads to get a position on a search results page. Organic search is almost always a better long-term investment and should be done to its fullest before buying ads.
