The best new addition to SNH this year? The exhibition hall walking tours. If you ever find trade show floors overwhelming or wish vendors would cut through to the good stuff, the walking tours did exactly that! The tax themed walking tour did not disappoint. Here’s the mini break down of all the vendors on the tour and who was the fan favorite!
Hope Brown, also known as the Tax Minded Bookkeeper, and Nancy McClelland, the infamous Dancing CPA led us through the top 10 tax tech vendors that you need to know right now. Each vendor was asked the same three questions:
- What pain point do you solve for tax practitioners?
- How are you different from your competition?
- How much does it cost?
The tax tech vendors:
1. TaxNow – This new kid on the block is a must add to your practice. They automate transcript access and their key API access has you receiving alerts on upcoming notices being mailed to your clients up to two weeks before the letter even gets sent out. The best part? Forget having to collect all the POAs and manually uploading all the signed forms like you do with the competitor solutions. TaxNow automates the collection of Form 8821 from your clients so you have to do ZERO manual upload. Data collection from your clients takes only a few minutes via an easy link and you’re ready to go! Price point starts at $50/per taxpayer per year with volume discounts and rev share opportunities available. Transcripts go back 10 years! Try getting the IRS to pull anything from the archives for you.
2. RC Reports – If you’re doing any work with S Corporation owners or clients asking you if they should convert to S Corps, RC Reports is about to make your life so much simpler. They provide fully defensible reasonable compensation reports for your S Corp owners, most of whom do not currently have any documentation to support their compensation calculations. On top of that, they have a beautiful entity analysis report so you can stop manually creating an excel analysis every time an LLC or Schedule C client asks if they should convert. Price on an annual subscription starts at $2100 and goes up based on the number of entities but practitioners are charging $400-$500 for reasonable compensation analysis and $1000+ for entity structure analysis making this software a lucrative addition.
3. Tax Rep Network – this is your go to for learning when it comes to tax resolution. As tax practitioners, we all hope to never have to resolve anything with the IRS but unfortunately, we all know that it’s unavoidable. You can stop the fear of resolution work and stop referring your revenue elsewhere after adding this partner to your practice. For as low as $299/month you can get trained in tax resolution and gold members receive personal coaching, monthly Q&As and even support on marketing the services to your clients making this another profit driven firm addition.
4. Stanford Tax – FAN FAVORITE! Stanford Tax was hands down the unanimous favorite among tour attendees and there’s no doubt as to why. Founder, Dan Berenholtz, has built the tax organizer of our practitioner dreams. This AI driven tax organizer tool is way better than any organizer or checklist you have ever sent your tax clients. Not only can the AI build a customized organizer for every client, it will even tell them when they forgot to upload a 1099 from their Wells Fargo account for you. The details don’t stop there. The smart organizer will reorder your client uploaded documents to match the order of the tax return and then everything can be downloaded into a workable PDF workpaper already labeled, ordered, AND bookmarked for your prep. Even client comments will be sent directly to your workpaper so you know ahead of time when a client is asking if they should make a Roth IRA contribution instead of after you’ve already prepped. This tool will dramatically improve all the start/stop time you waste during tax season AND Insightful Accountant has an EXCLUSIVE discount only available for our BeInsightful members good through July 31st. If you’re not already one of our premium members signing up is worth the discount. Normal price point is an easy $12/return with bulk buy options and you won’t lose your credits.
5. Filed – This new addition to tax tech this year uses prior year returns to create easy client checklists for tax preparation and then can push client provided data into your tax software. The software is only working with 1040s right now making it ideal for practices with high volume individual returns. The tool even offers client specific memory in terms of how you treat certain items on the return and can repeat your treatment on that specific client. They also feature file management as part of their ecosystem. Price point is transparent at $60/return with volume and pre-pay discounts available.
6. ProtectionPlus – If IRS and state tax notices are giving you a headache meet your new outsourced resolution team. IRS response times are terrifyingly slow and sitting on hold is even worse. ProtectionPlus integrates with all major tax softwares and they take responsibility for all notice responses on your e-filed returns. Client got a notice that they’re not really an S Corp? ProtectionPlus has it. The IRS didn’t give them credit for an estimated payment? Don’t waste precious billable time on manual notice response when you can have an expert team do it for you. They will even sift through your client documents folders if you want them to and find the documents needed to do the response so save your time on research. There’s no competition for this team because no one else is doing what they are. They even offer digital marketing strategies to help turn your investment into a revenue generator. Price point is $10/1040 and $75/business return billed after you e-file. They can even handle tax court and ID theft issues. Your clients will be begging you for this piece of mind.
