On April 28th, Insightful Accountant was the first to break the news that a Microsoft Windows 10 (Windows X) update which began being pushed out shortly prior to the 28th, was causing QuickBooks Desktop to crash on workstations where the update had been installed. The Unrecoverable Error was being reported by users when attempting different QuickBooks activities but most notedly when attempting to Email (and no this was not the same error as experienced earlier this year following another Windows update). In the April 28th error, even when you attempt to check the Send Forms Preference after this latest Windows update, QuickBooks was now crashing with the Unrecoverable Error as soon as you selected the Send Forms option.
After working with Intuit 'Diamond Level' Technical Support for several hours essentially nothing could be done to resolve the problem in a satisfactory fashion other than completely removing Windows and then reinstalling it, along with everything else on the computer. That's a fix that generally would be unacceptable in most situations, taking too long and costing too much for most small business owners to tolerate.
So the resolution became a 'waiting' game to see if either Intuit could build a work-around on a programmatic basis, or Microsoft resolve their programming update issue. When we became aware that Microsoft knew that the problem 'was with their update' and that the same updates were causing issues with other software, not just QuickBooks, I felt that it wouldn't take too long before a Microsoft based fix would be on the way.
Sources at Microsoft said that a 'push update' would be forthcoming, or that the necessary corrections would be included in the next update. While it's been about 2 weeks, it seems that in the last few days we now have a resolution that has started being sent-out by Microsoft because just as suddenly as the original problem started to appear, it is now disappearing from the same Windows 10 computers with QuickBooks upon which it existed.
The impacted workstations that were crashing still crashing just a couple of days ago with the same problem detected on April 28 stopped crashing yesterday. A test today of all of the workstations at one of the clients most significantly impacted showed that every installation of QuickBooks was back to normal, running without encountering the Unrecoverable Errors.
Several updates were pushed out by Microsoft over the last few days as a bundle including updates to Windows 10, .Net Framework, and Outlook, so I am not certain that we will know exactly which of these resolved the issue, or was the original culprit, but at least the problems seem resolved in ever instance where we have checked with users.
