In regard to our country's Declaration of Independence Thomas Jefferson wrote, "When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation."
The actual vote of 'independence' from the British Empire was taken by the Continental Congress on July 2, 1776. Then on July 4th the thirteen British colonies on the east coast issued the Declaration of Independence in which the Continental Congress had declared that they were a 'new nation'. Therein were committed those great words, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
Even with the greatness of this 'history' our country has not only bled and died in wars over these principles, and fought among our own, but we have struggled ever since. And yet we always seem to overcome our differences because we realize that we do live in this great land, the greatest on the planet. For nowhere else is opportunity greater for so many. That is the very reason why so many have sought to come here... freedom and opportunity.
As we go into this Independence Day weekend, celebrating July-the-4th, please remember that it is about so much more than just a summer holiday with fireworks, parades, family gatherings, barbecues, picnics, baseball games, ceremonies, and political speeches at governmental monuments and cemeteries. Please salute in honor our Flag as it is proudly raised remembering those who conceived this Nation, and Military who have fought and died for the freedoms we enjoy including our Public Safety personnel and First Responders.
Let us not forget that COVID-19 is still with us as well, we are not yet 'independent' from it, so please take the precautions you feel are appropriate for you, your family, and those you will be around during the events you attend over the long holiday weekend. Freedom means being able to make our own choices but at the same time accepting responsibility for our actions when they not only impact ourselves but others.
And as we honor this Holiday of Freedom and Independence let us not 'segregate' any one 'sector' or 'group' within our Society but let us all identify with what our Declaration of Independence specifies, that all men are created equal (and therefore, all their lives matter).
