1096 Printing Errors
Various users and QuickBooks forums are reporting concerns like, "I was printing the 1096 form for 1099's and QuickBooks is marking the X in the wrong box. Anyone know how to get X in the correct box?".
I always recommend that users perform a 'test print' of their forms on plain paper and then overlay the pre-printed forms to check for alignment, as well as the content for correctness. In this case it does not seem to be an issue with minor positioning misalignment, but rather a program bug producing the error.
The problem is being reported by both QuickBooks (windows) desktop and QB for Mac users, and in 'supported versions' of QuickBooks that are 'up-to-date' in terms of product maintenance releases. Users are reporting that the '1099-S' box is being 'X-marked' rather than the 1099-Misc box.
In dealing with one of my own 'Mac' clients, I had them put a piece of post-it tape over the box being improperly marked, that way the post-it tape could be easily lifted off the form after it was printed and they could then mark the correct box with a black pen. Of course, you can always 'liquid paper' out the wrong box if you notice, and that is the BIG DEAL about this. How many people really 'check' to see if the correct box is marked???????? How many people will send in the 1096 (attached to their 1099-Misc.) with the wrong box checked?
I have researched this issue, and didn't find anything in QuickBooks Support, or even on the QuickBooks for Mac LittleSquare site.
So as you print your 1099 and 1096 forms, check them carefully, especially that 1096 to make sure the information is correct before submitting them to the IRS. You just never know where the 'X' may be.
